Good News From Wroclaw!!!
I found a Polish article (in Gazet.pl/wroclaw) about the OEC clinical trial in Wroclaw, Poland. I will try to summarize what is said in the article.
Yesterday, Prof. Jarmundowicz's team for the first time ever gave a transplant of nerve cells from a nose to a human patient.
The patient's spinal cord was penetrated with a knife, which left him paralyzed from the waist down. The patient, 26, was chosen from 50 candidates because of his good health and young age. They first took glia smell cells from the patient's nose which were cultured in the past weeks and from his cells frozen from two years ago. The surgery took place yesterday, whom 7 doctors injected the cells 120 times. Every injection had around 25,000 OECs, which should stimulate re generation of the spinal cord. However, it will take a year until we know if the patient will walk. The surgery was done after four years of research in the Neurosurgery Clinic of the Medical University in Wroclaw. The study was done on rats with very good results which resulted in the rats being able to climb the walls of their cages. Their research included the study of the rat's safety; leading to the knowledge of the rats not having infections or tumors.
Prof. Jarmundowicz said that this is still the experimental stage and we are at the beginning of it.
